I am writing to urge you to oppose the "Real ID" bill on Tuesday. This bill has not been discussed, and it contains very harmful language that will bring about a 'backdoor' national ID. We must not allow our fear terrorism (no matter how justified it is) to inhibit our freedoms we hold so dear. In addition, many scholars and experts have spoken out against this and other national ID efforts -- in their expert opinion, it will not make us any safer, only less free.
A national ID may be okay for communist China, but it is unacceptable to freedom-loving Americans. Vote no on the Real ID bill, and encourage open discussion in the Senate so other senators will know the facts on this dangerous piece of legislation.

I oppose the National ID act. Frankly, I think it is obscene that the US Senate is even considering this bill. The border with Mexico is wide open, but instead of dealing with this obvious problem, the American people are to be saddled with this feel good piece of privacy destroying legislation.
I urge you to vote against this. The record of knee jerk security provisions passed in haste by Congress is abysmal. Don't create another problem.

Do not pass the national ID card legistation!

Please take the time to read and annotate the National ID bill that will be coming before the Senate. We DO NOT NEED any type of National ID card for the general public. This is a Free Republic, not a Socialist State.

Greetings.
Re the National ID card. By encroaching upon our personal liberties little by little, we are handing our enemies a victory. It is very difficult to turn back the clock. Please consider the impact of your vote on our nation's future: Please do not support the National ID card.
Thank you for always representing California so well.

Dear Honorable Senators Burr and Dole,
I hope you will vote against the Real ID bill. I recall that the terrorists who committed 9/11 had valid ID issued by state authorities, and simply making the state DMV act as agents for a Federal database will not solve the problem of determining who deserves ID and who does not. The bill doesn't really do anything beneficial in this respect. It does, however, make the personal information of Americans available to the governments of Mexico and Canada, and I still haven't heard why.
I carried yard signs and worked my precinct for both Senators Dole and Burr, and would like to remind you both that the party I know is one of smaller government, that does not need to track citizens, that instead works on real ways of preventing terror.
Profiling harms society because it causes us all to live in fear...not from the evildoers, but from the police. ID checks do not prevent terrorism.
If we could issue an ID to every terrorist that said 'evildoer' on it, we would. Profiling is likewise ineffective, because it fails when an evildoer doesn't fit the profile. Our money is best spent on intelligence, analysis, and random screenings, truly random (dropping ID checks completely), so that evildoers know they run the risk of being screened.
People who know they're being watched, and that their innocent actions can result in police scrutiny, are people who become scared to step out of line. They know that they can be put on a "bad list" at any time. People living in this kind of society are not free, despite any illusionary security they receive. It's contrary to all the ideals that went into founding the United States.

I have been a resident of Maryland for 40 years and have the highest regard for your leadership in the Senate.
In honor of our Constitution and The Bill of Rights which I venerate, I appeal to you to vote against the National ID bill coming up for a vote on Tuesday without even debate. To give up the fundamental principles of our country in the name of fighting terrorists is to give Osama bin Laden and his fanatics another victory in America.
I do not recognize the country of my youth. Each day the Bush administration takes us further down a road away from that which made America the sanctuary and land of opportunity and freedom for millions who gave up everything for the chance to call themselves an "American". Tis a slippery slope we travel...The Patriot Act was passed without debate in the wake of the horrors of 9/11. Franklin Roosevelt comes to mind, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Fear is taking more toll on this country than the actual acts of terrorism: it is destroying the fabric of our flag and all it represents.

I am vehemently opposed to the "Real ID" act being foisted upon the American people in the supplemental spending bill. This is the United States of America, NOT the Peoples Republik of Amerika; the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany demanded ID papers for any transaction, and I don't want to live in a country like that. I want you to strip the Real ID act out of the legislation, and furthermore, I want you to oppose ANY such legislation that arises in the future. If the Real ID act passes, the terrorists and one-worlders will have won. Personally, I'm not going to present or carry any ID just to be a pedestrian in my own country. I don't care WHAT the law says; it will be in violation of the Constitution!

Dear Rep. Norton:
I know you can't do a lot about this dumb idea -- I expect you already tried in the House -- but I would appreciate it if you would corral some of your colleagues in the Senate and get them to recognize that by limiting anyone's rights, we limit everyone's rights. Maybe members of Congress don't think they are at risk of forfeiting habeus corpus or a host of other "inalienable" rights, but they are... it's the camel's nose under the tent.
I'd rather take my chances with terrorists because they are less terrifying than those who are protecting me by circumscribing my rights.
Do what you can. I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

I am writing you to urge you to oppose the Real ID Act. I believe Americans' privacy and identities are at risk. This act would make casual privacy violations by large corprations and small businesses alike quite easy. Furthermore, the Real ID Act would enable identity thieves everywhere.
Finally, the United States of America is no place to hear any variation of the phrase "Your papers please." A "yes" vote will be a victory of fear, not a victory for sensibile measures against terrorist threats.
